Dinercafé Soestdijk has existed since 1992, later expanded to include the adjacent De Groene Draeck. It was founded by Herman Ensing (of Het Golden Fust and De Wolthoorn). Since 1997, JanBas van Aalderen has been in charge of the household staff. Everything is somewhat dedicated to royalty. The small crown above the logo, the "royal feast" that changes daily, the entire interior featuring photos of the Royal Family—everything is in keeping with the name Soestdijk.
The Soest
Soestdijk, or “De Soest” as connoisseurs call it, is situated on the Grote Kromme Elleboog and is a household name in Groningen and far beyond. Two princes once stood behind the bar, and Prince Maurits found his beloved Marilene here. It remains a meeting place where you can encounter people from all walks of life and feel like a king or queen. They are drawn to the conviviality and atmosphere, but certainly also to the delicious food available at a modest price. In addition to the royal feast, there is a wide selection of other regal meals. With fries that are more than worth the effort alone. There is an extensive menu and a wine list to be proud of as well. Starters, main courses, desserts, vegetarian options, a balanced menu for responsible eating, and of course, plenty of small snacks to accompany drinks or a princely beer.
Available every day, as the café is open daily. Many guests have their “regular day,” and the café is therefore a meeting point for many different professional groups. A nice mix of ages is also an attractive feature.
At the back of the establishment, you can walk through to De Groene Draeck. The same cozy atmosphere flows seamlessly into the first. De Groene Draeck can also be rented for parties, drinks, or gatherings. It can accommodate around 80 people from Sunday through Wednesday. On other days, it becomes a bit difficult, as it is usually quite busy then.
The service is very personal and is referred to as “the court.” The names of those serving the guests that evening are written on a small slate. Without exception, they are all cheerful, friendly, and primarily focused on the guests to ensure they have a pleasant evening out.
