About ten kilometers north of the city of Groningen, you will find our restaurant Garnwerd aan Zee!
No, the restaurant is not located by the sea. Our name is a tribute to the past when, until 1877, the water flowing past here still experienced ebb and flow and it was a busy route navigated by merchant and fishing vessels.
The windjammers and peat ships have disappeared from the Reitdiep, and tjalks appear there only sporadically. Yet the Reitdiep valley, just like the village of Garnwerd, has managed to preserve much of its centuries-old charm. Garnwerd aan Zee is a modern restaurant, but is proud to have found a place in this rich historical setting.
Eating out
Good food and drink thrive even better in beautiful surroundings. Besides the large yet intimate restaurant, you can also take a seat on one of the terraces, where the vastness of the Reitdiep is even more appreciated. For the children, there is a lovely play beach with trampolines. If you arrive by boat, and it is no longer than 20 meters, you can moor in our harbor. We have a ship moored here ourselves as well. ‘De Goede Verwachting’ is a meticulously restored tjalk more than a century old, which we make available to our guests for various purposes.
