And then, quite unexpectedly, white smoke appeared after all! All programming was rearranged, and after just under an hour of suspense, a “good evening” was heard!
The beautiful smile, the kind words, and the whole circus surrounding it are, after all, a high-level experience. And should Jorge Mario Bergoglio – better known as Pope Francis – be able to express his Argentine roots just as well as the Argentine wines from the Chakana house, then a vibrant, mature, and characterful period awaits us.
On the evening the words “habemus papam” (we have a new pope) were spoken, I decided to open a bottle from the collection after all. No build-up needed (decanting), but after opening, honest and open, clear in aroma, taste, and finish. Chakana Mendoza Estate Selection Malbec 2011; naturally, the Malbec grapes are hand-picked and the yield is low. After fermentation – spontaneous by natural yeast – this fine, elegant Malbec spends eighteen months in a mix of new and one-year-old oak barrels. The oak dosage is refined, clearly distinguishing the wine from many bombastic Argentinian wines. Enjoy!
The next morning I get up feeling fitter than ever... a very spirited wine with a perfect execution. Franciscus: good luck and make it a lively affair, just as we are used to with Argentina (wine and Princess).
