Saint Martin, Sinterklaas…. mulled wine; 2 spades!

Saint Martin's Day is on November 11, and the Saturday following, Sinterklaas annually comes to brighten our country with his visit, sweets, and presents!

Tradition dictates that we drink mulled wine around this time. Red wine, heated to a maximum of 70% (otherwise the alcohol evaporates) and with the addition of cinnamon, cloves, star anise, orange peel, and a little honey/sugar to taste. However, the wine is less popular than 25 years ago, which is not surprising as we have much more choice.

I would like to introduce a wine that we can best drink as a modern substitute during the “two spades” period. Chianti Classico from Duedipicche….loosly translated, indeed 2 shovels. The Duedipicche vineyards are located just outside Siena, in Castelina in Chianti, Tuscany, Italy. Chianti Classico holds the highest Italian classification, DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita). Chianti Classico is often recognizable by the logo featuring a black rooster, the Gallo Nero. This Gallo Nero simply indicates that the producer is affiliated with the consortium of winegrowers in Chianti Classico.

The winemaker of this Chianti Classico, made from 100% Sangiovese, has succeeded in maintaining a good balance between quality and price. In this classic Chianti, you discover the right balance of flavors between fruit expression (berries, blackberries) and herbs (bay leaf). A present, persistent yet dry finish. A very pleasant wine with freshness and elegance. Pairs well with many dishes, such as spicy pastas, lamb and beef, game, and stews. Recommended outside of meals with savory side dishes, such as hard cheeses or a variety of dry sausage. Those Italians know how to go far and have the best interests of the Bishops at heart. A delightful evening…
