The taste of Florentin

Outside the city center of Groningen, in the Ebbingekwartier, sits Florentin. Also simply called FLO. A total concept, as the owners call it themselves.

Florentin ‘FLO’

Tom Bullinga and Emile Bos drew inspiration for FLO in Tel Aviv, Israel. The Florentin neighborhood there is up-and-coming and therefore very interesting. "We did nothing but eat there for a whole week," says Tom. "They cook with a lot of herbs and spices there, and the dishes are often small, making it fun to share." And that is exactly what FLO is all about: having a good time together in a relaxed atmosphere, and simply enjoying super delicious food.

The Tel Aviv feeling

The building housing the restaurant is an old gas factory. It has a nice, raw vibe, a bit in the style of Tel Aviv. That fits well with their street food concept. Inside, there are rough, untreated walls, lots of plants, and even a clothesline hanging on it. Every detail has been considered to let you experience the real Tel Aviv feeling.

‘Florentin is un-Groningen-like,’ says Tom. ‘The flavors of the Middle East, combined with a touch of fusion. It is street food, but leaning a bit more towards fine dining.’ The concept is designed to be accessible to everyone. From 8 to 88 years old. Because you can share the dishes, there is something delicious for everyone.

Balagan style

What you really shouldn't miss at Florentine is the Balagan dessert. On the menu, they sell it as: “Balagan dessert, a disorderly, confusing, and/or overwhelming situation.” This Hebrew word means chaos. And that is exactly what you get when you order this. A piece of paper on the table onto which the wait staff spreads all sorts of different flavors and textures. A colorful and flavorful feast to finish with! Oh, and how about the delicious homemade lemonades to quench your thirst…

The menu is updated every 4 to 6 weeks, and a few bestsellers, such as the ceviche with wasabi ice cream, return every now and then. So there is plenty to discover!
