Fine dining right in the center of Groningen. It doesn't get much more central than this. On Oosterstraat, in the shadow of the Martinitoren. An oasis, as La Vie’s owners Jeroen and Lara Sportel call it themselves. The restaurant is atmospheric, with relaxed chairs and sofas against an unplastered wall. A bit raw yet elegant. Linen napkins and wine glasses on the table. Casual chic.

The establishment is small-scale and lends itself perfectly to a delightful, casual evening out. For that is the intention when you take a seat at the Sportel couple's restaurant. Hospitality is a top priority for the couple. "When people come to eat with us, we take plenty of time for them," says Jeroen. "The tables are occupied only once, we play relaxing jazz music, and we try to create a sense of calm. Guests should want for nothing."

Upon entering the restaurant Vive la Vie The guest is welcomed with various appetizers, followed by delicious amuse-bouches. Everything is prepared in-house using high-quality ingredients. Jeroen prefers working with fish and shellfish. He considers the Yellowtail Kingfish to be one of the finest products. This predatory fish, farmed in Zeeland, is perfect for both raw and cooked preparations. Additionally, the chef enjoys cooking with scallops, langoustines, or skrei (winter cod). However, he also likes to incorporate a fine piece of venison or poultry into the menu.

Jeroen's cooking style is best described as classic French with an Asian twist, inspired by the many trips the duo has taken. Lara seamlessly adapts the wines to match, with a clear preference for European wines. "A light, fresh style of wine is practically always included," she says. Jeroen doesn't really have a signature dish. "I just try to surprise guests every time," he says with a laugh.
After the extensive dinner, you can step right into the vibrant nightlife, as everything is within walking distance. And if that wine pairing turned out to be a bit too much, there are plenty of hotels to choose from.

Vive la Vie operates without an à la carte menu. On weekdays, you can choose from a 5, 6, or 7-course surprise menu. On weekends, the only choice is 6 or 7 courses. The menu changes with the seasons. Depending on availability, dishes on the menu may also be changed. The kitchen can accommodate allergies, dietary restrictions, and other requests, provided these are indicated when making a reservation. Reservations are highly recommended!

You find Vive la Vie at Oosterstraat 39 in Groningen, the restaurant is open for dinner from Wednesday to Saturday.
