DOver the past five years, the number of beach pavilions in the Netherlands has increased from 396 to 413. In Groningen, this number remained the same, with a total of 6. This represents an increase of 4%, a growth that deviates positively from the negative trend in the overall beverage sector (-2%). Notably, this growth is largely driven by new pavilions in the non-coastal provinces. Here, 9 pavilions were added (+41%), of which 4 businesses were located in Gelderland alone.
Over the past five years, the coastal provinces of Zeeland and North Holland have seen the highest relative increase in beach pavilions. In absolute numbers, the increase was greatest in North Holland (+6).
In the ten beach municipalities with the most beach pavilions in the Netherlands, 252 beach pavilions are located, an increase of 7% compared to five years ago. This number accounts for over 60% of the total supply. Within the top 10, The Hague, Zandvoort, and Veere remain the beach municipalities with the most pavilions. The municipality of Veere has experienced the strongest growth over the past five years. Here, the number increased by 6 beach pavilions to 30 establishments (+25%). Almost half of the supply in Zeeland is located in this popular tourist coastal municipality.
A successful year should count approximately 30 beautiful summer days; 2016 and especially 2018 were good years in terms of sunshine hours. While a year averages around 80 warm, summery, and tropical days, nearly 120 of these days were recorded by the KNMI in 2018. With two heatwaves, it was very pleasant to be by the beach. As a result, the past year was a year hard to surpass for beach operators.
The coast is a popular spot for many foreign tourists. According to NBTC Holland Marketing, the coast was visited by 2.6 million foreigners in 2017. This is an increase of 12% compared to 2015.
The number of overnight stays along the coast has increased by approximately 10% over the past 5 years to over 24 million. This is entirely driven by growth in the foreign segment (+30%, over 45% of the total).
