HThe number of overnight stays in the city rose to 578,690 in 2017, an increase of over 4%. In 2016, the number of overnight stays already exceeded half a million. Overnight stays in the city have shown a structural increase since 2003. Earlier this year, it already became clear that the number of overnight stays in the province reached a record high.
In the city of Groningen, an increase in the total number of overnight stays is once again visible. While there were 554,190 overnight stays in Groningen in 2016, this number rose to 578,690 in 2017 (source: Municipality of Groningen). This represents an increase of nearly 4.5%. Additionally, it can be seen that the number of overnight stays at campsites shows a slight decrease of 2.7% compared to last year. The total number of overnight stays at campsites in the municipality of Groningen amounts to 17,860 this year. The increase in the number of hotel overnight stays and the slight decrease in the number of campsite overnight stays correspond to the national trend according to CBS figures.
It already became clear this spring that the number of tourist overnight stays in the province had reached a record high in 2017, according to CBS figures. The total number of overnight stays rose from 1,454,000 in 2016 to 1,559,000 in 2017, an increase of over 7%. The largest increase was seen in the number of overnight stays by foreign guests (31%). For instance, there were 342,000 foreign guests in 2016 and 447,000 in 2017. This was the largest increase compared to all twelve provinces.
