Nothing is as sacred as an excuse to get drunk. That is why we invented the drinking game, for when we just can't drink normally. A while ago, we already wrote something about the American beer pong, and that it is actually quite strange that it isn't yet played in every student house and at every party in the Netherlands. The Studentenkrant seems clairvoyant, because a few weeks ago, on March 7, the first beer pong tournament took place in a Groningen pub. And naturally, I was there.
We were expected at 8:00 PM in The PleaPlaypong, a young company started by four Groningen students, organized the event. Entry fee: €12.50. Grand prize: €100. Thirty teams of two stood ready to throw a ball. The typical American red cups were filled with beer and placed on the professional beer pong tables. We were emailed the rules in advance, but of course, I hadn't read them. Slightly tipsy from a party I had just left, it was the perfect start to an evening that had been spared very little alcohol.
It started well. My teammate and I actually managed to throw a few balls into the cups. Some even bounced, forcing our opponents to drink double. I felt the same fate befalling us increasingly in my stomach. As with any drinking game, of course, you are simply supposed to finish your own beer in between rounds. And since many rounds had to be played and the pace was therefore high, this meant a true drinking spree.
We lost Round 1. Fortunately, by then we understood the rules and thought we would easily beat the gentlemen in Round 2. Of course, we couldn't have known then that these were the Vindis who would eventually win the entire tournament. We were thrashed astonishingly hard, and the alcohol continued to flow freely. In a half-drunken daze, I noticed that the game was catching on. There was a good atmosphere.
Even though round 3 didn't matter anymore, since we had already lost the first two, we went in with renewed spirits. We had to take on two blonde ladies who had also lost everything, so this should have been a piece of cake. Nothing could be further from the truth. A fun rule in beer pong is that you are allowed to distract each other in almost any way possible. Staring at four half-naked tits is obviously not good for focus. Especially not when shirts are pulled down so low that you wonder why they are still on at all.
In no time, we had one cup left and the ladies still had five. What the fuck? But with more alcohol, we seemed to become more motorically gifted. We cleared the ladies' five cups before our own last one was cleared. But maybe it also had something to do with the fact that I dropped my pants a few times as a distraction.
Anyway, we managed to add one round win to our names after all. Proud as we were, we decided to hit the binge. During the final, everyone gathered around the last table and the game was accompanied by a lot of cheering. I didn't follow it at all after that, as the beer had by then damaged all my senses. Vindicat upheld its honor by providing the two winners to the tournament. Hats off to them.
In summary: nice concept, good atmosphere, next time drink a little less beforehand.
