On Monday, October 3, 2016, the fourth edition of the Northern Netherlands Barista Championships (NNBK), the premier barista competition of the North, will take place during the fifth and anniversary edition of Horecabeurs Noord Nederland. The authentic Martinikerk in Groningen will once again host the exciting competition in which professional (beginner and advanced) baristas compete against one another.
The match
During the fourth edition of the NNBK competition in 2016, each participant makes two espressos and two cappuccinos. Each participant has a maximum of ten minutes to do this.
An espresso machine of the brand Victoria Arduino is used, supplied by Mocca d’Or. Milk is supplied by Friesche Vlag and Campina. All other necessary equipment is available at the competition; the participant may only bring his/her own coffee and coffee grinder.
A three-member professional jury will judge the baristas on technical skills, presentation of the drinks, competition zone, and general impression. The winner wins a trophy, eternal glory, and may call themselves ‘Best Barista of Northern Netherlands 2016 / 2017’.
Preliminary rounds
To narrow down the field to eight finalists, two preliminary rounds are being organized. These will take place on Sunday, June 26 and Sunday, July 31, 2016, at World of Barista, Grote Markt 35 in Groningen.
Oorganization and workshops
Under the leadership of Ulas Tarakci, official SCAE Authorised Barista Trainer & Certifier and owner of World of Barista, the competition will take place between the eight finalists from the preliminary rounds. In addition to organizing the competition, Tarakci will also host various (free) Barista workshops accessible to every trade fair visitor to expand their personal knowledge of coffee.
