Heineken is suspending rent through May for 130 hospitality properties it owns. The beer brewer is also waiving half of the April rent for those same properties. With this, Heineken hopes to offer some financial breathing room to entrepreneurs awaiting government support.
Rental obligations suspended through May
Heineken says that for struggling entrepreneurs, half of the mandatory rent for the month of April will be waived. For 130 hospitality businesses owned by Heineken,
Rental obligations through May suspended.
Also mediation for subletting
Heineken It states that it can bear the risk of lower rental income because the company is primarily a beer brewer rather than a real estate company. The brewer immediately adds that it remains to be seen whether property owners, for whom real estate is the primary source of income, can make a comparable offer. Where Heineken is not the owner but a ‘subtenant’, the brewer plays a mediating role where possible, “with the understanding that we cannot decide on someone else’s wallet,” according to Heineken.
Heineken is also a partner of the platform: #helpthehospitalityindustry the voucher campaign for the hospitality industry during the crisis.

Keg exchange and tank beer swap
In addition to rent discounts and mediation, Heineken also offers the option to exchange opened kegs and tanks. Connected tanks will be emptied and filled free of charge before opening, and opened kegs will also be exchanged for free upon reopening. (unconnected draft beer has a shelf life of two months, so do not turn off the cooling/cold room during the closure of the hospitality industry!). Furthermore, it is advised not to turn off the tap system completely, but to ‘set it to water’ and refresh it weekly (see instructional video).
