On Sunday, June 26, 2016, beer lovers are warmly welcome to ‘Biertje Voor Onderweg’. A bicycle tour past no fewer than five local breweries in the city of Groningen. Participants will not only have plenty to taste and learn, but can also count on fun, fitting activities.
The organization, consisting of five event management students at Hanze University of Applied Sciences, realized that while there are many events centered around beer, few take place at the original locations of the beverage itself. Consequently, the organization came up with the idea of having people cycle past five local breweries instead of coming to a site or pub. The up-and-coming event managers have, in collaboration with the participating breweries Rockin’ Ludina Brewery, Brouwerij Martinus, Jotner, Bax Beer and City Brewery De Kromme Jat a varied program has been put together.
There is plenty for guests to experience during Biertje Voor Onderweg; at every stop, there is ample opportunity to do, taste, see, and experience. Guests can count on interactive workshops and pub quizzes, but will also hear the stories behind the beers and witness how they are brewed. After the bike tour, starting around five o'clock, the closing drinks will be held at Bax Bier on Friesestraatweg, where votes will be cast for the city's best specialty beer.
In addition to providing a unique experience for all beer lovers aged 18 and older, the organization aims to put local brewers more in the spotlight with this event and put Groningen on the map as the country's beer capital. Therefore, the proceeds do not go to the organization itself; the group has chosen to donate the money earned to the Martinikerk and its restoration. The breweries are also closely involved in this project; the proceeds from a jointly brewed beer will likewise go towards the restoration of the Groningen church.
