The Hague, June 8, 2021 – The Dutch business community is increasingly resuming operations. This also applies to the hospitality industry. For entrepreneurs and self-employed professionals with children, this may have consequences for their childcare allowance. After all, changes in your life, such as changes in income or childcare hours for your child, affect the amount of allowance you receive. Therefore, the Tax and Customs Administration/Benefits Department is urging entrepreneurs and self-employed professionals to check their details for the childcare allowance and update them if necessary.
The childcare allowance is an advance payment. The amount of allowance you receive each month depends on your expected situation. For example, how much you expect to earn this year, and how much and what type of childcare you plan to use each month. At the end of the year, the actual amount of allowance you were entitled to is calculated based on your actual situation. If it turns out that you received too much allowance, you must repay the excess to the Tax and Customs Administration/Benefits. Any allowance received too little will be refunded to you.

Program Director for the Renewal of Benefits Services Inge Groeneveld: 2021 is also an eventful year for entrepreneurs and self-employed professionals. It is highly likely that their situation looks different by now than it did at the beginning of the year. That is why we are urging them, especially now, to check their details for the childcare allowance and to continue doing so regularly, so that they receive what they are entitled to. Not too much and not too little.

• Download the Kinderopvangtoeslag app. This gives you an overview of your details at any time. You can also immediately update common changes, such as in income or childcare hours. Prefer not to use the app, or do you have a change that you cannot submit via the app? Then log in with your DigiD to Mijn Toeslagen via toeslagen.nl to check and update your details.
• Use the calculation tool to check if your estimated annual income is still correct. Now that you are further into the year, you have a clearer picture of your expected income. Has your income changed? Change it immediately via the app or Mijn Toeslagen.
• Are you unsure about your income? Then it is better to overestimate. By overestimating, you reduce the chance that you will have to repay benefits at the end of the year. After all, the higher your income, the less benefit you receive. Be aware, however, that declaring a higher income can also have consequences for other benefits, such as your healthcare allowance or housing allowance.
• Set a reminder in your calendar for each quarter to check your details for the childcare allowance and make changes if necessary. For example, make it a habit to check immediately after your quarterly VAT return whether you need to make any changes regarding your allowances. Do you have an allowance partner? Don't forget to report changes in his or her situation as well.
• Are you closing your business? Let us know immediately via Mijn Toeslagen. You will be entitled to childcare allowance for at least another 3 months afterwards.
A lot can happen in a year, both professionally and personally. By regularly checking your details and immediately reporting changes in your situation, you reduce the chance of receiving too much or too little allowance. Check toeslagen.nl/kinderopvangtoeslag for more information and examples of changes that affect your allowance.
