The potatoes, vegetables, and meat meal (AGV) remains immensely popular, with chicken, green beans, and potatoes being the absolute favorite ingredients for this evening meal. This is evident from research by MAGGI, conducted by Motivaction among 3,344 Dutch people. According to MAGGI, part of the Swiss Nestlé, it is clear that the AGV meal is firmly rooted in down-to-earth Dutch cuisine, although ‘Dutch fare’ has become more modern and varied over the years.
“When we established ourselves in the Netherlands 120 years ago, ‘Dutch cuisine’ didn’t look fundamentally different,” says Justijn Gombert, Business Executive Manager at MAGGI. “Today, we see that half of all meals still consist of meat, vegetables, and potatoes. However, there is much more variety in the way they are prepared, with, for example, seasoned meat and ready-to-cook potatoes.” MAGGI, part of the Swiss Nestlé, has been a familiar sight in Dutch kitchens since 1895. The Netherlands prefers to cook simple and tasty food.
According to MAGGI, the fact that every meal must above all be tasty, according to most Dutch people, is timeless. What stands out is that ‘easy to prepare’ takes a solid second place as the reason for preparing a meal. This is related to the short amount of time people allocate for shopping and cooking. As many as two-thirds decide what meal they are going to prepare on the day itself, or only 2 hours beforehand.
Top 5 reasons to make a meal
City dwellers spend considerably longer in the kitchen.
A remarkable fact here is that residents of the three major cities significantly more often choose meals requiring as much as 40 to 50 minutes of preparation. In the Netherlands, the most frequent choice is a meal with a preparation time of 11 to 20 minutes. However, time spent in the kitchen has been decreasing in recent years. Gombert: “People still want to cook for themselves. They find it tastier and healthier. However, people are increasingly seeking convenience and speed when preparing a meal themselves. This started a century ago – and is still relevant today. MAGGI is determined to continue helping with this in the future. We do this because we believe that cooking and eating a homemade meal is one of the most important moments of the day.”
