On April 22, 2016, a pop-up drone café opens on the Technical University Campus in Eindhoven. Drones will take orders here and then deliver them; in this way, staff and drones work together in daily life.
In the café, six drones will fly along a fixed, programmed route. The idea is to have the guest point out their order on a menu. The drone then passes this on to a second ‘colleague drone,’ and the bartender will subsequently prepare the order and hand it to the drone that serves it. In this way, the bar staff has more time and space available, alongside preparing drinks, to focus on hospitality.
The initiative lies with Blue Jay Eindhoven and consists of a team of engineering students from Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). In collaboration with projectstudio Cornelis Serves The pop-up café is being set up to celebrate the university's 60th anniversary. In this way, people can experience how humans and technology can work together in daily life.
Hospitality staff have no fear of flying competition in the future; the initiative has no goal or intention to replace hospitality staff. The designers simply want to show the creative and technological possibilities that exist with drones.
The pop-up drone café is open from April 22 to 24 on the Campus of the Technical University in Eindhoven.
