In the autumn of 1994, it opened Eatery D’ Ouwe Brandweer its doors at Gedempte Zuiderdiep 75-77 in Groningen city centre. Now, 30 years later, in 2024, we can celebrate this special milestone. “We are very proud to have been a fixture in Groningen’s hospitality landscape for 30 years,” says owner Pol de Bruin. D’ Ouwe Brandweer – once started as a hip eatery with an unmistakable interior – managed to win the hearts of many a Groninger and the stream of tourists visiting Groningen over the past 30 years.
In these 30 years, quite a lot has changed in the city of Groningen, certainly when it comes to dining out. During this time, D’ Ouwe Brandweer has consistently shown that it is a great place to drop in for a bite and a drink, an extensive three-course dinner (whether or not combined with a cinema visit), or a pub quiz. “We always ensure that we are affordable and that the convivial atmosphere one expects from a real eatery is a top priority. We are regularly called ‘the coziest eatery in Groningen,’ and we are proud of that,” says Pol de Bruin.

When it’s your birthday, you’re allowed to throw a party. And guess what? That party is going to last a little longer than you might normally expect. At D’ Ouwe Brandweer, we’re going all out for a whole month with several fun promotions. For instance, the first three reservations per day in November will receive a €30 discount on their bill, and our own two “Brandenblusser beers” on tap are €3 a glass in November. A nice old-fashioned price for a specialty beer. Naturally, the entire pub will be festively decorated, because what’s a party without streamers?

When you get to celebrate a milestone like turning 30, you naturally want to give something back. That is why – in consultation with the Groningen Food Bank – 30 guests will be dining with us free of charge. This allows us to give many families something extra during the month of November. And that is what really makes you feel like it’s your birthday.
