Tip for development projects

The Night of the Tip is an annual student initiative in which, this year on May 28, 2016, as many hospitality establishments as possible in fourteen participating cities donate their tips. The proceeds fully fund five hand-picked, small-scale but sustainable development projects.

In this way, everyone is given an accessible opportunity to contribute to development aid. Over 100 students in Utrecht, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Wageningen, Groningen, The Hague, Tilburg, Nijmegen, Eindhoven, Breda, Den Bosch, Delft, Leiden, and Maastricht are working selflessly day and night to make this a great success. The projects are selected from many applications in collaboration with Wilde Ganzen Foundation, who also doubles the amount raised.

Initiative
The initiative for ‘the Night’ originated in 2005. Groningen student Wies Maas wanted to draw more attention to development cooperation and, at the same time, lend a helping hand to people in developing countries. With the Night of the Tip, an ideal combination was born: a responsible night out for a good cause and a day dedicated to development cooperation.

‘De Nacht’ grew into a household name in Groningen and gradually conquered the rest of the Netherlands as well. By now, the Night of the Tip Foundation from a National Board and a City Board in each participating city that collaborate on a voluntary basis for the Night of the Tip.

Projects 2016
The organization of Nacht van de Fooi hopes to raise €80,000 this year through the fourteen participating cities. With this, they aim to fully fund the following sustainable projects:

– Pani Foundation committed to better education and more employment for children and young adults in Bangladesh. The proceeds from the Night of the Tip will fund weaving and spinning machines and provide suitable education; a sustainable solution that ensures long-term employment and education.

– Friends Indeed is committed to children with a physical or mental disability in India. The proceeds from the Night of the Tip will be used to set up a tuk-tuk repair workshop. In this way, disabled children are trained as car mechanics and helped to find a job; because the children also learn to teach, the project is sustainable and the children are encouraged to become self-sufficient.

– Palm Foundation is committed to underdeveloped areas in India. The project to which funding is being donated is taking place in Thalavadi, a poor and remote town. In this area, there are hardly any toilets, water supplies, or electricity connections, which has many consequences for the public's health. With the contribution from Nacht van de Fooi, Stichting Palm will install 75 toilets in this area. Maintenance of these toilets is provided by a Sanitary Committee supervised by the local foundation.

– SamenScholen Foundation works in the most disadvantaged region of Nicaragua. In the village of Esperanza, a sustainable rainwater harvesting system will be built, where the construction will simultaneously serve as a training course for the local population. In this way, they can also build this system themselves for their families.

– African Foundation of Wonder Dedicated to disadvantaged families in Ghana, the organization combats poverty and ensures that children can attend school. African Foundation of Wonder helps improve the families' independent existence by offering them start-up capital and guidance to set up their own businesses. With the help of this project, the families are able to provide for their basic needs after one year.

– Ray of Light Foundation committed to the empowerment of women and youth in disadvantaged regions of Nigeria. In the village of Amaekpu, dangerous kerosene lamps are still being used at the local market. The project will therefore install ten solar-powered lamps for this market. This will allow the economy in this village to be maintained in a healthy and safe manner.
