Five specialty beer shops and pubs in Groningen have stopped selling Grunn beer. They have lost confidence in the beer, the brewery, and owner Jaap van der Weide.
Grunn or Pitt?
Van der Weide feels attacked and denies all accusations. "Grunn beer is relabel beer," says Bas Bergman, owner of three Mitra stores in the city. "I have received boxes of Grunn Goudhaantje before where the labels for Pitt beer were loose inside."
Bergman is not the only beer enthusiast who mentions Grunn in the same breath as relabel beer—beer from one brand with the label of another brand pasted on it. "Pallets of beer bottles from a brewery that had been declared bankrupt were delivered to me," says a brewery owner in Groningen. "They were destined for the Groningse Bierbrouwerij (the company responsible for Grunn beer, ed.)."
Some Groningen residents have kept bottles that support this claim. At first glance, there is little to see on the brown glass of Grunn Goudhaantje, but under a bright fluorescent lamp—half hidden beneath the label of the Groningen Brewery—the faint outlines of the Pitt beer logo are visible.
