Canal Festival calls attention to Sustainability and waterways

The 5th edition of the Grachtenfestijn, organized by Stichting Grachtenfestijn and Progress Events, will take place on Sunday, August 27 and Monday, August 28.

This year is the farewell tour of the Trintella4green One of the highlights. These gentlemen will sail around the world in an energy-neutral way and recycle plastic on board. Furthermore, in addition to the necessary spectacle, a number of electric boats, solar boats, and a hydrogen boat will participate. This year, on Sunday afternoon, August 27, starting at 2:00 PM, the foundation is once again organizing the ‘Grachtenparade’ with the theme Green / White. Green is the color of sustainability, and green / white are the colors of Groningen. New this year are the no fewer than four delivery trips across three waterways originating from the province.

This year, there is room for a maximum of 150 decorated green and white boats in the Groningen Diepenring. Along the entire route, a flyboarder will be present to lead the procession of boats around the Diepenring. Together with various choirs, open terraces will be set up along the route, and the parade will be accompanied by a brass band.

Canal parade

The Canal Parade takes place on Sunday starting at 2:00 PM in the Zuiderhaven. The procession of boats will then turn into the Hoge- and Lage der A and sail a circuit of the Diepenring. Upon returning to the Zuiderhaven around 3:50 PM, attendees can enjoy a performance by DJ Arnoud. At 4:30 PM, the prize for the best and most beautifully decorated boat will be awarded. Participants who still wish to register can do so via info@grachtenfestijn.nl as long as there is still room.

Choirs / programming

The Grachtenfestijn Foundation encourages as much entertainment and open terraces as possible along the route. At Het Ludina Terras, there is a large bouncy castle for the children and a jazz session led by Bert van Erk. A shanty choir will perform their repertoire at the jetty of the Kool canal cruise company.
