Starting with the new 2016/2017 theater season, the Grand Theatre will once again become an independent theater with its own management. In the summer, the Grand Futura foundation will take over the theater and programming from Oosterpoort/Stadsschouwburg, reports the Municipality of Groningen.

Following last year's bankruptcy, Oosterpoort/Stadsschouwburg took over the operations of the Grand Theatre. This proceeded successfully. The programming attracted new visitors to the Grote Markt, all within the budgeted amount. With this foundation, Grand Futura can make a fresh start.

The Grand Theatre on the Grote Markt will also provide space for a production function for theatre makers and choreographers from the North and from the international network of Grand Futura. A contribution of €79,000 has been made available by the Municipal Executive to cover the (start-up) costs.

In addition, Grand Futura is becoming part of the Station Noord 2.0 partnership. The joint goal is to strengthen the creative and business environment for performing arts talents in the North, thereby increasing artistic diversity and dynamism.

The one-off additional contribution for start-up costs is in addition to the operating subsidy for the second half of 2016. The Municipal Executive will closely monitor matters during the start-up phase. Paul van Rook, Alderman for Culture, is pleased with the transfer and states that this step paves the way to make the Grand Theatre a defining venue for talent development once again.
