Although employees in the hospitality industry experience high work pressure, they are also among the healthiest workers in the Netherlands. This is evident from research by Vacatures.nl based on figures from the National Survey on Working Conditions of the CBS (Statistics Netherlands). Over 30% indicate having very good health and 83% say they have no medical complaints. By comparison: only 23.7% of employees in other sectors indicate having very good health..
High work pressure in the hospitality industry
Hospitality workers claim to have a job with high work pressure, which is largely caused by having to work quickly. They have less trouble with the amount of work they have to do and with the peak moments when they have to work extra hard. Additionally, employees in the hospitality industry have less difficulty with the work than the average Dutch person.
The hospitality industry mainly requires a lot of energy (and is sometimes dangerous)
Regarding working conditions, it is striking that the hospitality industry frequently deals with activities that require physical strength, generate noise, and are occasionally dangerous. Minor accidents occur quite often in the hospitality sector. Stab wounds and cuts, in particular, are the order of the day, but burns are also frequently mentioned by many hospitality workers. It is not without reason that research by VeiligheidNL shows that five thousand hospitality workers make their way to the hospital every year.
Nice colleagues
The hospitality industry is a pleasant place to work; employees of hotels, restaurants, and cafes agree on this. They indicate that they consider the atmosphere in the workplace to be one of the most important aspects of a job. Additionally, hospitality staff receive a great deal of social support from managers and colleagues. The hospitality industry scores very well in terms of both friendliness and support from colleagues. Only in the education sector are colleagues considered friendlier.
Average employee
The average employee in the hospitality industry is clearly younger than the average employee in the Netherlands. Whereas the average employee in the Netherlands is a man aged approximately 45 to 55, the average hospitality worker is a woman aged 15 to 25.
