Kadepop 2016: a new festival site with a different atmosphere

Last weekend, the fifth edition of the pop festival ‘Kadepop’ took place on the former SuikerUnie site in Groningen. The two-day festival, which had been held on the EMG Faktors grounds for the past four editions, took place on a new and much larger site this year, posing a challenge for both the organization and its visitors.

The varied line-up, featuring bands such as De Staat, Haevn, Dewolff, and Delikt, resulted in a mixed program on the stages and attracted an equally diverse crowd. The programming this year was occasionally somewhat peculiar; for instance, the closing Saturday night performance by ‘De Staat’ on the main stage (indoor stage) paled in comparison to the party the men of Delikt threw with the crowd on the Hooghoudt stage (outdoor stage). With Typhoon’s spectacular closing performance at Kadepop 2015 still fresh in mind, it was particularly striking that a larger site and larger stages do not specifically lead to an enhancement of the festival atmosphere. Additionally, the band sound in the main stage hall (concrete factory hall) was difficult to control, and it was scorching hot.
