Cat cafe: this is still missing in Groningen!

GEnjoying a cup of coffee and a piece of cake in the company of eight playful, purring, and sleeping cats—that is a cat café! Kopjes, the first cat café in the Netherlands, opened its doors on Wednesday, April 22. Now it is Groningen's turn, where we plan to open Kattencafé Poeslief in early 2016!

We, Karin Kwant (29) and Laura de Vries (30), love cats very much and are lucky enough to both have one living at home. Laura had already visited the cat café in Berlin, liked it so much here and thought: ‘this is still missing in Groningen’!

Imagine you’d love a cat as a pet, but your boyfriend or girlfriend is allergic. Or perhaps you live in a small student room and your landlord won't allow it. Then you can come to Poeslief for some feline love and cups (of coffee). Maybe you want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city for a while, or are you simply in need of relaxation? With us, you can forget everything for a moment and enjoy a tasty meal in the company of our cats. This isn't just nice for you; the cats enjoy the attention too. A win-win situation!

A home for the cats
We have already started the search for the purrfect property. With your help, we hope to raise 10,000 euros. What do we need the money for?

Of course, we need money to turn Poeslief into a true cat paradise! Poeslief will become a home for approximately 8 cats currently living in a shelter or cat rescue. Together with the caregivers, we select cats that enjoy having people and other cats around them. A nice new home starts with a well-ventilated and bright building with a floor that is ‘cat-proof’: it must be easy to clean and comfortable for the cats. It is important that our cats can have a good life, play freely, and have enough space to do so. That is why there will also be an enclosed area for the cats where they can retreat for a while. So, there is a good chance that we will need to do some renovations.

To make it completely pawsome for the cats, the café will be equipped with custom-built climbing routes, scratching posts, and lots of cat toys. We also need furniture so you can sit comfortably among the cats, surrounded by cheerful cat accessories. Furthermore, we need an espresso machine and an oven, and to finish it all off, we want to paint the walls a sweet, kitschy color.
