Reservation site Couverts was acquired by review and reservation site Iens in October. In the Telegraaf of November 21, chefs also expressed anger regarding Iens's practices. As a result of the acquisition, all restaurants currently using only Couverts can now also be booked directly via Iens and TripAdvisor. Restaurants currently using both platforms will soon be able to operate with just one reservation system.
KHN observes that consumers make extensive use of these platforms. This acquisition must not lead to higher costs for the restaurateur. This acquisition creates a dominant position for Iens. KHN is closely monitoring developments.

KHN believes that guests wishing to reserve a table at a restaurant should do so directly with the desired restaurant. The platforms are extremely suitable for guests to orient themselves. They offer a comprehensive overview, making searching easy. But that is, of course, not free.
In December 2014, Iens was acquired by TripAdvisor. Guests can view 23,000 restaurants on the platform and make direct reservations at approximately 3,750 of them. Iens has 30 million visitors annually and processes no less than 200,000 independent reviews per year.
Iens, Couverts, and sub-label dinnersite.nl are part of TheFork, the global label for all online restaurant reservation sites of TripAdvisor. TheFork is the largest restaurant reservation platform in Europe, with more than 35,000 restaurants in 12 countries and more than 12 million visitors per month.
