Nijmegen is the cheapest city for outdoor terraces in the Netherlands for the fifth year in a row. The average price for a round of drinks on a Nijmegen terrace is €18.77. Terrace prices in Nijmegen are just as high as last year, meaning the city retains the title this year as well. On average, terrace prices have risen by 2.4% this year, meaning the price increase is lower than last year's inflation (2.5%). The results come from the annual terrace survey of Van Spronsen & Partners hospitality consultancy.
The annual survey of the price of a round of drinks (2 coffees, 2 soft drinks, 2 beers, and 2 rosé) reveals that Haarlem is the most expensive city for outdoor terraces this year. A round of drinks costs €22.09 there. Haarlem was in third place last year but has taken over the top spot from The Hague this year. The city is followed in the ranking by ’s-Hertogenbosch, The Hague, and Amsterdam, with Rotterdam rounding out the top 5.
Prices have risen the fastest in Utrecht this year, by 5.3%. As a result, the city climbs 5 places in the rankings to 6th place. Zoetermeer is also rising sharply this year; last year the city was in 15th place, but due to a price increase of 4.1%, the city is now in 8th place.
The cheapest cities
A round of drinks costs on average €3.32 less in Nijmegen than in Haarlem. Rosé wine lovers, in particular, are best off heading to Nijmegen, where a glass costs an average of €3.15. At €1.92, a glass of beer is cheapest in Eindhoven. The designated driver is best off going to Breda for a soft drink and to Nijmegen for a cup of coffee, with average prices of €2.13 and €2.05 respectively.
Terrace purchasing power highest in Groningen
For the study, terrace purchasing power is also determined annually by comparing the average disposable income of residents against terrace prices. This shows that residents of Groningen have the highest terrace purchasing power, with an average of 20.1 rounds per week. The city is closely followed by Eindhoven and Maastricht, where residents can order an average of 20.0 rounds per week. In ‘s-Hertogenbosch, people can only buy 16.7 rounds per week. The average terrace purchasing power across all measured cities is 18.8 rounds per week. This represents a decrease in terrace purchasing power compared to the previous year, when people could afford an average of 19.1 rounds per week.
Trends
In addition to the traditional bestsellers rosé, wheat beer, and (homemade) iced tea, this year we are seeing Radler, non-alcoholic Radler, and other non-alcoholic specialty beers, such as 0.0% rosé and wheat beer, taking off. Gin & Tonic, Aperol Spritz, and Green Iced Tea are also popular on various terraces. Newcomers this year are the Hugo cocktail (elderberry syrup, prosecco, lemon, and mint) and the Chocomel Ice Cold Cup, which provides ice-cold hot chocolate.
