The asparagus season is in full swing. From April 9 to June 24, the jewel of Dutch soil is widely available. Reservation site Couverts conducted research among 1,500 of its gourmets into this seasonal vegetable. Among other things, they looked at whether consumers regularly prepare asparagus at home themselves and whether they specifically go out to eat during the asparagus season.
Surprising asparagus insightn
A staggering 97% of the Dutch turn out to love asparagus. The tips and the delicate flavor of white asparagus are particularly popular. When asked about their favorite asparagus menu, two-thirds prefer a traditional preparation: asparagus with baby potatoes, ham, and a boiled egg. Furthermore, the research shows that over 93% serve this "white gold" more than three times between April and mid-June. Although we enjoy preparing this seasonal vegetable ourselves at home, at least three-quarters of respondents eat asparagus out at least once during this period. The reason for this is that consumers want to find new inspiration for home cooking, and they find it tasty and simply sociable.
Asparagus turns out to be an unknown superfood
One in three consumers indicated eating the queen of vegetables purely because it is so healthy, and 14% because it is ideal for their figure. Although consumers are aware of the health aspect, less than half of the Couverts tasters did not know that asparagus belongs to the superfoods. Asparagus fits perfectly into the current health trend. It is full of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that promote health.
Benefits of asparagus
Asparagus contains only 21 kcal per 100 grams and promotes metabolism, digestion, and fat burning. In addition, they are packed with essential vitamins, such as B1, B2, B6, C, and E. Although further studies are forthcoming, the substance glutathione in asparagus also appears to have a cancer-inhibiting effect.
Asparagus neighborhoods take center stage with superfoods
During its Asparagus Weeks, running through May 25, Couverts is putting homegrown asparagus in the spotlight. The Dutch eat only 800 grams of asparagus per year, a negligible amount. Couverts wants consumers to taste asparagus at its restaurants and make them aware of this healthy, delicious national pride. Click here for the full selection.
