Night mayor and entrepreneur Chris Garrit poured his heart, soul, and a bag of money into his new love: city stage EMG Faktors. For nearly three years, he worked on transforming the old grain silo on the Eems Canal into a cultural factory. The official opening party kicks off on Friday at 5:00 PM: three days and four nights of non-stop celebration that the dream has come true.

“It started here almost three years ago with a bottle of beer and a bottle of soft drink. Then there was a demand for a bottle of wine. By now, we serve almost everything,” says Garrit about the EMG Faktors bar. “We go for quality with organic wines, but also with local city beers.”

Homemade conversation tables made of pallet wood stand throughout the building. "We made a lot of things ourselves. From items we were given or found by the side of the road. We also assembled the bar entirely ourselves. Except for the bar, everything is on wheels, so the layout can be different every time."

"The grain silos hung in this space. They reached almost to the ground, so we sawed them down so we could use the space. The floor is original and almost a hundred years old."

EMG Faktors wants to specialize in gin and tonic. "In Barcelona, my girlfriend Alieke and I went from bar to bar serving gin and tonics. We thought: we have to bring this to Groningen. We have a special gin and tonic menu, many different types of gin, and various tonics. Because the latter is important too."

Garrit is incredibly proud of his garden. "When it's warmer than fifteen degrees, the garden opens. I made a fountain myself. And we have the first waterfall in Groningen. People can relax here. On Sundays, mothers come here with strollers—it's great!"
EMG Faktors is a place for everyone.
