Susan Huitenga is going to make her dream of her own tasting room, Mout for Dutch beers, come true. She is renting a monumental building on the Zuiderdiep.
Two years ago, the first thoughts crossed her mind to open a tasting room under the name Mout somewhere in or around the city center of Groningen. "It took quite a bit of effort to find a suitable location. I thought I would be able to get started faster in a city with so many hospitality businesses. It turned out to be a bit disappointing."
The aspiring entrepreneur says she is delighted with the monumental building on the corner of Gedempte Zuiderdiep and Pelsterstraat. "There is still some work to be done, but the owner is working hard to secure the permits for the renovation. We should be able to put the first beers on the table sometime next year."
Eight months ago, Susan Huitenga announced her plans, and at the same time, the counter on crowdaboutnow.nl started running. The total amount raised by enthusiastic friends, acquaintances, and beer lovers from across the country has now reached 81,700 euros. Enough to now move towards the opening of her first own business. "With an extra 30,000 euros, I can still invest in inventory."

Susan unveiled her plans via social media early last year. She was surprised by the reactions. "I received a lot of encouraging responses. It explains the increased interest in craft-brewed beer. Among producers and consumers."
That interest strengthens her belief that a tasting room has a chance of success. "Especially in Groningen, where dozens of breweries used to be located. Look at the city's annual beer festival, where five thousand connoisseurs come every year."
