The company Scharrelvlees Drenthe supplies veal and beef that is guaranteed to be free of antibiotics and gluten. The animals are kept with great care on an organic dairy farm in Wapserveen, Drenthe.
The livestock farm also complies with current animal welfare standards in the broadest sense, according to the inspection organization SKAL, which inspects reliable organic production on behalf of the Ministry of Economic Affairs. The organic dairy farm comprises both buildings and animal housing constructed entirely from sustainable wood from Scandinavia. Inside, the cows and calves lie in a spacious barn on a bed of straw and have free access to the pastures; calves stay with their mothers.
Care
According to the dairy farm, every animal has its own nature and character, and this is taken into account when naming the animals. While other dairy farms use antibiotics to prevent their animals from getting sick, the farm in Wapserveen has an antibiotic value of 0%, says owner Angelique Schipper. In this way, the animals' meat can be called antibiotic-free. Furthermore, the meat is gluten-free, which is due to the feed the animals receive. Schipper does not use pellets, but rather natural hay harvested from unsprayed and untouched grasses, flowers, and plants from their own pastures.
Sale
The animals are taken, accompanied by the farmer, to a Frisian regional butcher who is also a certified butcher. The farmer then takes the meat into his own care. Finally, the meat is offered for sale on scharrelvlees-drenthe.nl and concerned. Schipper himself no longer buys meat in the store, “You can taste it, it tastes very different, you really taste what you are eating. In the store, all meat tastes the same, but that is strange, because every animal is different.”
Scharrelvlees Drenthe currently supplies meat to a regular clientele including ECHOS Home Het Baken of the Veterans Institute in Darp and de (H)eerlijke Burger in Steenwijk and Meppel, but would like to expand in Groningen and, in the future, throughout the Netherlands.
