Starting January 2, students, staff, and guests of the University of Groningen will order their sandwiches, soups, salads, or hot meals from a new provider. This week, the University of Groningen and northern caterer Beijk Catering are signing a contract to provide services at 10 Food & Drinks locations in the city of Groningen. All 25 Food & Drinks employees will remain employed by the University of Groningen and will be seconded to Beijk Catering.
The wishes and needs of staff and students have changed in recent years. For instance, more international students study at the University of Groningen every year, and topics such as healthy eating and sustainability have become more important. To better connect with the guests, it was decided to choose an ‘expert’.
The University of Groningen was the last university in the Netherlands to manage its catering services in-house. Bidders in the tender were evaluated on the topics of internationalization, customer satisfaction, health & vitality, and sustainability & environment. After several rounds, Beijk Catering emerged as the highest-rated bidder. For Beijk Catering, this award signifies the fulfillment of a long-held wish and a 30% increase in the number of catering locations.
To staff the 10 locations, Beijk Catering offers various concepts starting January 8, 2018, including the Chef Serveert concept: catering with a restaurant feel, where the employee behind the counter prepares the dishes on the spot. Chef Serveert stands for healthy and delicious food in an atmospheric setting. At Chef Serveert, guests can enjoy sandwiches, soups, salads, and hot dishes. In addition to the fixed assortment, Chef Serveert offers a monthly changing selection: two specials, such as a healthy wrap with a surprising filling and a delicious panini; topped just a little differently. Chef Serveert also presents two new ‘combo deals’ every month. These are often sandwiches with a juice for a competitive price. Then there is the monthly changing Chef’s Special Menu, featuring, for example, a green salad, a generously topped sandwich, and a drink for an attractive price. Naturally, there is a wide range of options for vegetarian or vegan guests.
Illy Cafés offer hot drinks, sandwiches, juices, smoothies, and freshly baked pastries. Illy is a leader in the ‘premium coffee segment’ and stands for innovation and excellent coffee quality. At the ‘shop-in-shop’ Yam Yam to Go, guests can create their own Asian dish. First, they can choose a noodle or rice base, and then the topping (meat, fish, or vegetarian). These hot dishes, served in noodle boxes, can be taken away or eaten in the restaurants.
