The Dutch hospitality sector grew strongly over the past year, with 1,000 new establishments. This growth was driven by an increase in the number of restaurants, lunchrooms, and takeaway/delivery locations. The number of beverage providers continues to decline.

Most growth in takeout/delivery locations, lunchrooms, and restaurants with national cuisine.
The number of takeaway/delivery outlets grew by 14% over the past year to over 2,300 points of sale. Lunchrooms are also on the rise in the Dutch hospitality landscape, with over 200 new outlets opening in the past year. Since 2010, growth has exceeded 55%, meaning the Netherlands now has nearly 2,000 lunchrooms. The number of restaurants serving national cuisine recovered over the past year following the sharp decline during the economic crisis.

Number of bars/cafés continues to decline
The downward trend in the number of cafes in the Netherlands continued in 2015. Last year, no fewer than 190 cafes had to close their doors permanently. The number of discotheques also continued to decline last year. Since 2010, the number of discotheques has fallen by nearly 40%.

Growing number of outlets in Full Service and Quick Service segments
The driving force behind the recovery in the number of establishments in the hospitality sector is the sharply growing quick-service segment. In total, 817 outlets were added within this segment last year. The number of restaurants also increased, with a total of 327 new businesses.
