City Brewery De Kromme Jat from Groningen, the Muifelbrouwerij in Berghem, or Brewery De Snaterende Arend in Amsterdam: this is just a selection from the many microbreweries that the Netherlands boasts. In 11 years, the number of craft beer brewers has tripled. While the Dutch Brewers' Guild counted only 64 breweries in 2003, this year there are already 220.

This is evident from figures from the Klein Brouwerij Collectief (KBC), the largest cooperative of beer breweries in the Netherlands. "Specialty beer is really booming," says chairman Constant Keinemans.

Of the 220 microbreweries, just under 60 brewers opened their doors last year. Keinemans also foresees growth in the future: "People are simply still looking for something special." The spokesperson for Pint, an association for beer lovers, confirms this picture. "Specialty beers are starting to become trendier in a sense," the spokesman stated. "People are no longer drinking from small vases or flutes. They are special, almost wine-like glasses."
