They call it the living room of Groningen themselves: Werkman, on the Grote Markt. ‘Eating, drinking, dancing, working is our slogan,’ says manager Marvin Legebeke. And all that with a healthy dose of down-to-earthness and, above all, no-nonsense. With its enormous glass wall, the building is unmissable on the renovated market square. Right opposite the City Hall, which features a terrace where many a Groningen native occasionally pulls up a chair for a drink.

The name comes from the Groningen printer and artist Hendrik Nicolaas WerkmanAnd the place exudes this atmosphere. Inside, on the wall, you will find details of his artwork. This style is also carried through to the house wines and the coffee service. Warm, contrasting colors make the place feel cozy and like home.

And that homey atmosphere is exactly what you are looking for if you want to work outside the home but in an inspiring environment. On the top floor, various workspaces have been created with extra power outlets. So if you no longer have an office, you can come here. And while you are here, you won't want for anything. Coffee, tea, lunch, or a good glass of wine—everything is available. While you are working hard, you can occasionally just stare outside for a moment when inspiration is lacking.

Legebeke describes the menu as a ‘crowd-pleaser, with the occasional deviation’. It features carpaccio, various sandwiches, fried salmon, sole, and grilled watermelon. But also some more standard dishes such as a hamburger or a steak. ‘For the tourist who drops by occasionally,’ says Legebeke.
According to Legebeke, the absolute bestseller is the Egg Hemingway. A classic starter with salmon, brioche bread, Hollandaise sauce, and truffle.

Werkman It is not the only terrace on the Grote Markt, so it is important to clearly distinguish yourself. They do this by using a Josper in the kitchen. This is a type of barbecue that gives certain products that characteristic smoky flavor. The use of different brands than the neighbors also makes Werkman just a little different from elsewhere.

But Legebeke also considers etiquette very important. ‘Everyone should be able to be themselves here, including the guests. That’s where it starts. I think it is important that all guests are addressed formally and that we hold the door open for them, especially in the winter. Also, holding glasses from the bottom, serving from the right, carrying everything on a tray, and placing a napkin under a cocktail. That makes the Werkman experience complete.’
Werkman is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner. On Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, a DJ plays from 8:00 PM onwards. You can find restaurant Werkman at Grote Markt 41 in Groningen. More info Werkmangroningen.nl
