The small-scale cultural Theatertapasfestival celebrates its fifth anniversary this year (March 4 to 6) by offering emerging theater makers a stage for three days in the Ebbingekwartier. At this festival, Tapas refers to various small bites of theater, not the well-known small Spanish snacks.
From Friday, March 4 to Sunday, March 6, 2016, the anniversary edition of the Theater Tapas Festival place. Waiters guide the audience along a route of various types of theater. In this way, emerging theater makers get the chance to showcase their work to the public and scouts.
Route and program
The various routes start at the main location, Het Paleis, followed by locations such as Platform Gras, the Watertoren, the games shop De Purperen Draak, Open Lab Ebbinge, and the NNT Machinefabriek. The evening concludes back at Het Paleis with drinks and live music – complete with snacks. On Sunday, there is also a children's and family program featuring, among other things, a visual artist creating shadow theater with children aged 4 to 12 present.
Grow
The initiative comes from three Minerva theatre design graduates who noticed that the range of venues in Groningen was disappointing; reason enough to create their own stage. At the first edition, three performances by three theatre makers were presented to 100 visitors. Now, after five years, there are eight acts in various artistic disciplines: from tap dance to poetry and from traditional theatre to dance. It can be seen as a fun night out; it is accessible and therefore a nice way to get acquainted with theatre.
“We are here for theatre makers with big plans but no stage. We bring audiences, theatre makers, and entrepreneurs together in a mix of performance, unique locations, and conviviality.” Says Artistic Director Andrea Hooymans.
