A hidden gem in Akerkstraat, Café de Witte Raaf reopens!

CCafé De Witte Raaf sits tucked away like a little jewel in a side street off the fish market, close to Der Aa Church. The round bar, above which kerosene lamps adorn the small wooden ceilings, forms the heart of the old brown pub. De Witte Raaf will reopen on September 1, 2017.

Nostalgia

As we wrote earlier in our Groningen Pub Guide The decorations in Café De Witte Raaf are a reminder of a past life, the life of the former landlord who was an inland skipper until 1978. A yellow lifebuoy, ship's tools, a rudder, and a painting of a tugboat and a coaster on the choppy waves. It is the authentic elements that make the café a warm local pub. Omroep Groningen EYE reports that the new owner of the ‘Raaf’, Erik Verschragen, wants to leave the café’s unique interior completely intact. “The café must retain its original appearance; just look at this beautiful bar and the original side walls, isn’t that lovely?” says Verschragen.

Music

What has changed, however, is the background music in the café. Whereas it was previously quiet in Café De Witte Raaf for years, apart from the chatting regulars, former OOG radio DJ and current owner Verschragen will be spinning the necessary tunes. His genre, ‘Dutch Hits’, will be heard frequently after the opening on September 1st!
