Groningen is looking for a successor to the current Night Mayor, Chris Garrit. Interested potential Night Mayors may apply by submitting a letter of motivation until April 6, 2016, to hear on May 6, 2016, who has been elected as the new Night Mayor of Groningen.
Previous editions of the night mayor election were successfully organized by What's Cooking Events, with support from the Municipality of Groningen. Last year, no funds were made available by the Municipality of Groningen, making it somewhat difficult for the organizing agency to handle the election down to the last detail. In the background, many parties are now working to get the contest off the ground after all.
Position as night mayor
The Night Mayor is a responsible position; the guardian champions the interests of Groningen's nightlife. He or she serves sleeping, working, and recreational night-time users in Groningen and also forms a bridge between the city's daytime and nightlife. The Night Watch is therefore the connecting factor between various parties active during the day and at night.
Election
Registration is open until April 6; the expert Night Committee will nominate several candidates from among all submissions. A live vote will start on the website on April 6, 2016. Everyone can then vote once for their favorite candidate. From May 5 to 6, the expert jury will deliberate; public votes will be given significant weight in this process. Finally, on May 6 at midnight, it will be announced (both in person and digitally) who may call themselves the Night Mayor of Groningen for the duration of 2016 through 2018.
Anyone residing in the Municipality of Groningen may write a letter containing a motivation explaining why he or she should become the new Night Mayor of Groningen. Send a letter / photo / video / poem / song before April 6 (until 23:59) to chrisgarrit@gmail.com under the heading ‘night letter’.
Chris Garrit
Acting Night Mayor Chris Garrit has passionately guarded Groningen's nightlife for the past four years and remains involved with the night through the International Night Ambassadors Federation (INAF)“I am working to promote the night mayorship worldwide because I strongly believe in promoting local culture,” he states on his website. www.groningernachtwacht.nlHe is also working with many other night mayors to organize the NIGHT MAYOR SUMMIT 2016: a conference where all kinds of (inter)national night professionals will meet.
