Herberg Onder de Linden in Aduard retains its Michelin star (owned for 30 years)
A restaurant can earn a maximum of three Michelin stars. Currently, the Netherlands has 2 restaurants with three Michelin stars, 18 with two stars, and 93 restaurants with one star.
The Michelin Guide originally aimed to let people discover France by car and (to sell more Michelin tires). Until 1920, the distinctive red guide was free; after that, it cost about seven French francs. It listed hotels and restaurants by category. The rating system, from one to three stars, has been in place since 1931.
Nowadays, the Michelin Guide features restaurants from 30 countries on three continents. Michelin's restaurant inspectors are experts in the field of food and drink, and visit restaurants anonymously. So you never know if you are in the running for a Michelin star, although inspectors are regularly spotted in advance by restaurateurs.
