The familiar sight of chef Jean-Michel Hengge behind his stove in Groningen's Ellebogenbuurt is disappearing. Restaurant Muller closes on July 1.
Jean-Michel Hengge has turned 65 and has sold his property to Sebastiaan Schokker (30) and Maeyke Schokker-Schooljan (36). At the end of August, they will open their own restaurant, Bellami’s Bar à Manger, at that location. It is a completely different concept from restaurant Muller, where Hengge cooked for a Michelin star for many years.
The two are no strangers to the hospitality industry. Schokker attended hotel school and worked behind the bar at, among others, café Wolthoorn & CoSchooljan was the chef and owner of the brasserie until three years ago. At Van Boven and café Hooghoudt on the Grote Markt. Until recently, they ran a bed and breakfast together. Picon Suite in the Turftorenstraat. Their plan to start a hotel in Maastricht did not go through.
"We have always said: if Jean-Michel stops with Muller, we would love to go there," said the hospitality couple. Now the time is almost here. Renovations will begin after July 1st, as the kitchen is getting a few extra gas burners and the restaurant is also undergoing a metamorphosis. "The atmosphere will be un-Groningen-like, but not necessarily luxurious. And no, Jean-Michel won't be interfering anymore, but who knows, maybe we can tempt him again next year for a special Muller evening."
"With us, no dots on the plate, but sauces that go with a hearty meal."
